— PROJECT NAME

Survey Manager

— ROLE

UX Designer

— DURATION

12 weeks

Overview: Ziosk began the redesign of it's entire B2B/B2C SAAS application with the vision to make the best software possible for the next generation. There are a total of 7 modules that make up the entire application. I was tasked with Survey Manager, the most important module of them all.

Goal: Create a brand new Survey module with cutting edge usability standards along with making a visually appealing tool that can be easy for small and large clients to use so they can gather consumer data from their customers at their establishments.

Background

Survey Manager is the primary tool for our customers to gather consumer data for their restaurants on a daily basis, for thousands of locations and thousands of restaurant-goers. This data is highly valuable to our biggest clients and we must make a usable design for our clients to gather their data in an easy and fun way.

Design Process

I started with a deep dive into the problem, collaborating closely with our project manager, head of business intelligence, and senior manager of software development to understand the project requirements. Then I started my research, including a competitive analysis, heuristic evaluation, and interviews which yielded the creation of user personas and journey maps.

A Site map was developed to ensure a user-centered flow, then I shared my insights with the team. Moving forward, I created wireframes, starting with low fidelity and eventually high fidelity screens, maintaining continuous team involvement. Weekly briefs with the team to keep everyone updated on my progress.

Problem

Our current version of this module is extremely out-dated and far from usability standards. I will need to conduct a full overhaul of the module and start from scratch with Survey Manager. I will revisit the fundamentals:

1. Understanding the user goals and needs

2. Discovering pain points in the user journey

3. Reevaluating the flow

Insights Gathered

After collecting research from the top survey applications across the industry, I conducted a Competitive Analysis. I also created a Journey Map to portray what it would be like for the user to complete a task. I learned what features every single survey application had, what makes them different and familiar.

Wireframing & High Fidelity Design

The priority for Survey Manager was to establish a concrete hierarchy so there could be a solid foundation to build upon. I went through many meetings with my fellow designers and engineering team to narrow down how the application should function. Low-fidelity mockups were created in the beginning but due to the short duration of the project, I had to go straight into high-fidelity as soon as possible to show progress to stakeholders. I validated my designs through several meetings with stakeholders and potential users.

I used Figma to create my high-fidelity designs and we use material design for all of our components, color themes, padding, so then engineering can easily implement our assets when it is time for development.

Results

Key takeaways from this project are:

- Include engineering from the beginning and constantly reference the team during the process, this helps reduce going back and forth on the design

- There is only so much you can do for a version 1, most important priority is to create a solid foundation and a scalable design.

-Create a roadmap for your project and do not allow anything to derail you from the objective. Set dates for meetings ahead of time and constantly chip away at developing a great design.
